Strength adaptation requires the training stimulus to be followed by adequate recovery before the next stimulus arrives. When sessions are stacked too closely, particularly intense ones targeting the same muscle groups, the recovery window is interrupted before it is complete. The body is asked to perform and adapt simultaneously, which it cannot do efficiently.

The result is what is known as overreaching in the short term and overtraining in the persistent long term. Performance drops. Progress slows or reverses.
